How to spoil Mum in the age of social distancing

Love you – near or far.

Mum, hugs are few and far between, but rest assured, not even a global pandemic can keep me from celebrating you. So, what does this Mother’s Day hold? All the things we’d usually get up to together, with just a bit of a twist.

Brunch banquet

Our customary coffee and shared slice of carrot cake mid-morning might look a little different this Mother’s Day. But just because we can’t venture to one of our favourite cafés doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy good food – and even better company.

So, take your pick from a range of eateries offering takeaway (it’s on me) and let’s catch up on video call. After all, you’ve come a long way since the days of answering your mobile phone upside down. If you’ve forgotten how to FaceTime, just ask Dad to help you.

The doorstep gift drop

While most people would probably call chocolates cliché, you’ve always had a sweet tooth.

Putting aside your blood sugar level for a moment, I think this Mother’s Day you deserve a little bit of a buzz. Think chocolates, coffee and even wine. But it’s not just any trio of treats – it’s a gift from home.

South Australian chocolatier Robern Menz has teamed up with CIBO Espresso just for Mother’s Day. Every Menz gift box made at its Glynde and McLaren Vale stores comes with a bag of 10 CIBO coffee pods. I can already see you bouncing off the walls when the sugar and caffeine meet. Sorry, Dad.

There’s also a gift box with wine from Adelaide Hills’ family winery Amadio Wines. As I’ve only seen you drink alcohol once in my entire life, I think I’ll keep the bottle for myself.

RAA member perk: Save on FruChocs with a 10% discount at The FruChocs Shop.

Make a wish

No, you probably won’t ever meet Tom Cruise or find a puppy in your letterbox. Open the envelope instead. No, not that one – that’s your power bill. By the way, Dad says you need to stop switching every light on – you’re not auditioning for Broadway. It’s a WISH Gift Card, which you can spend at Woolworths (don’t buy toilet paper) or even BIG W.

RAA member perk: Get 5% off pre-purchased WISH eGift Cards. You can pre-purchase WISH eGift Cards and have them, emailed directly to your inbox, or buy physical gift cards online and wait for them to arrive in your letterbox.

Something to look forward to post-isolation

Consider this an IOU – a night out at the movies. Gold Class, in fact.

I promise never again to argue over which movie we should see. It’s your pick.

*Why did I write that? No, it’s okay: she has superpowers so surely, she can read my mind – do not pick a movie with Tom Cruise. Please.*

RAA member perk: When cinemas re-open for us to enjoy a flick on the big screen, RAA members can access discounted movie tickets at Wallis and Event Cinemas. Keep an eye on this space.

Until we can sit side-by-side at the cinemas again, a big Happy Mother’s Day to you and, most importantly, kudos for raising one of the greatest human beings on the planet.

Love always,

your favourite child.
