BMW’s 125i M-Sport is the top-selling car in this range – and it also takes top spot in the Best Small Car over $35K category this year.
What sets it apart from the rest
The 125i M-Sport is the complete package. Where most sports cars probably aren’t ideal for everyday use, this sporty hatch is and performs well under most road and weather conditions.
What it’s like to drive
Fuel consumption is relatively low at 5.9L/100km, although it still lags slightly behind the hybrid models in this category.
The 125i hatch is a superb everyday drive, with the 2L bi-turbo petrol engine boosting overall handling. There’s also good steering and excellent grip around corners under all road conditions.
What it’s got
- High-quality interior trim materials.
- Cockpit-style cabin layout.
- A touch smaller inside that other small cars in this class, but judges say it’s more cosy than cramped.
- Well-contoured adjustable front seats.
Is this the car for you?
If you’re willing to pay a little more for extra power and better equipment, the 125i is a good buy and, surprisingly, a superb everyday car that won’t chew through the tank.
It has a relatively high depreciation though, so that’s something to think about if you’re selling after five years. What’s more, the 125i only has a basic three-year new-car warranty – similar to others in this class, but well below what many other manufacturers offer in other classes.
