A new month brings new adventures, so what does the start of August hold? Wine, art, road trips and making a difference, that’s what.
1. South Australian Living Artists Festival
When: 1–31 August
Where: Venues throughout SA
Hundreds of artists will exhibit at the South Australian Living Artists Festival (SALA) – a community-based visual arts festival held in unconventional venues throughout South Australia. Think bookshops, cafes and cemeteries. Wherever you choose to get arty this August, take a moment to marvel at the talents of South Australian artists, and maybe even add a piece or two to your collection at home.
2. Illuminart: Travelling Light
When: 2 August
Where: Port Pirie
Illuminart is a SALA show worth a mention of its own. Watch Port Pirie’s silos light up with artwork blown up as large as possible and colourful animations that dance along the towers. Bring a few chairs or a blanket big enough for the whole family and enjoy this unique light show produced by artists and animators from around regional SA. The spectacular sight is well worth the last-minute road trip to the mid north. If you can’t make it to Port Pirie, you can catch the roving show in other locations around the state.
3. Walk a Mile in My Boots
When: 9 August
Where: Victoria Park to South Parklands
Sometimes you need to put yourself in someone else’s shoes to appreciate what you have. That’s exactly what hundreds of South Aussies do each year during Hutt St Centre’s Walk a Mile in My Boots, an event raising funds for people experiencing homelessness. There’s still time to register, so lace up your boots, brave the cold and hit the pavement for a good cause.
4. Cellar Treasures Weekend
When: 10–11 August
Where: Langhorne Creek
Langhorne Creek wineries will delve into their cellars to showcase their best drops at Cellar Treasures Weekend. Treat your senses even further with degustation dinners and cheese and wine pairings. In the morning, forget eggs on toast and sit down for a sparkling red breakfast – one of many delights on this year’s program.
5. SA Variety Bash 2019
When: 10–17 August
Where: Mawson Lakes to Murray Bridge
Get behind the wheel and go on an epic 8-day road trip to raise funds for sick children as part of one of Australia’s longest-running charity motoring events – SA Variety Bash. This year, entrants will travel along tracks that showcase different parts of the stunning South Australian landscape.
